چکیده

abstract nowadays, measuring water quality is very important for comprehensive management of water resources. suspended sediment is one of the most important water quality factors which greatly affects environment health. however, its measurement needs too much time and money. it was therefore tried in the present study to assess the applicability of modelling relationship between suspended sediment concentration and some easily accessible and cheap water quality factors. towards this attempt, 61 water samples were taken during october 2007 to july 2008 from main outlet of tarbiat modares university forest watershed as a representative condition governing northern iranian forest areas. the samples were taken during different hydrological conditions and corresponding lab analyses were consequently made. the results of regression modeling ultimately proved the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and turbidity, alkalinity, and phosphate with correlation coefficient beyond 0.264 (p=0.006), 0.088 (p=0.018), 0.987 (p=0.001) and respective estimation and verification errors of less than 78% in all classified periods, base flow, and flood conditions, respectively. the models obtained during the study can be then used for estimation of suspended sediment concentration in different hydrological situations.

Suspended Sediment Estimation and Forecasting using Artificial Neural Networks

The methods available in the literature for sediment concentration estimation are complicated and time consuming and necessitate cumbersome parameter estimation procedures. In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used to forecast and estimate sediment concentration values. The forecasting results obtained using previously observed sediment values were close to the real ones. The se...

Suspended Sediment Estimation using Improved Neural Network Mapping

An accurate sediment prediction is proposed using a neural network approach. Due to the important role of sediment prediction in hydraulic engineering applications, accurate prediction is highly crucial. A data processing is utilized to improve the performance of a neural network for more accurate mapping. Statistical characteristic of training data is modified using prescribed modification tec...

Suspended Sediment Estimation for Rivers using Artificial Neural Networks and Sediment Rating Curves

The methods available for sediment concentration and flux estimation are largely empirical, with sediment rating curves being the most widely applied. In this study, a comparison is made between artificial neural networks (ANNs) and sediment rating curves for two rivers with very similar catchment areas and characteristics in the north of England. Data from one river are used to estimate sedime...

Stochastic Flocculation Model for Cohesive Sediment Suspended in Water

Existing flocculation models for cohesive sediments are classified into two groups: population balance equation models (PBE) and floc growth models. An FGM ensures mass conservation in a closed system. However, an FGM determines only the average size of flocs, whereas a PBE has the capability to calculate a size distribution of flocs. A new stochastic approach to model the flocculation process ...

Turbidity Threshold Sampling for Suspended Sediment Load Estimation

Abstract: The paper discusses an automated procedure for measuring turbidity and sampling suspended sediment. The basic equipment consists of a programmable data logger, an in situ turbidimeter, a pumping sampler, and a stage-measuring device. The data logger program employs turbidity to govern sample collection during each transport event. Mounting configurations and housings for the turbidime...

Turbidity-controlled sampling for suspended sediment load estimation

Automated data collection is essential to effectively measure suspended sediment loads in storm events, particularly in small basins. Continuous turbidity measurements can be used, along with discharge, in an automated system that makes real-time sampling decisions to facilitate sediment load estimation. The Turbidity Threshold Sampling method distributes sample collection over the range of ris...
